The same applies if the senior had a regular (or forward) mortgage on their property. The heirs would be responsible to pay that loan off regardless if it was a forward or reverse mortgage. The great thing about a reverse mortgage is it is a NON Recourse loan, meaning it is secured by the value of the home only. The estate is only responsible for what the home sold for. If the home is sold for less than what is owed on the reverse mortgage, the lender takes the loss, the estate IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the difference. This is hugh benefit especially now with falling real estate values.

These myth are common and still many people fail to realize the truth. One more interesting faith is that "Will heirs sell the home to pay off the mortgage?". once the borrower pass away, the mortgage due is laid on their heirs and they bear the responsibility to settle the mortgage. In such case, if they feel it as a burden, they simply sell the home and settle the loan. Moreover, Everyone has this fear inside.
